Ethiopia plans massive road expansion

Posted Tue, 30 May 2006

Addis Ababa ? Ethiopia has a five-year road development programme to upgrade and construct new roads, said the Ethiopian Road Authority (ERA).

The programme, which would cost 43bn birr (about $5bn), would start this year and end in 2010. The government would cover 63 percent of the costs, said ERA.

Additional funding would be provided by the World Bank, the European Union, the African Development Bank and several donor and lender countries.

ERA public relations officer Samson Wondimu said the programme would increase the amount of good roads in the country from 37 percent to 57 percent, which would drastically cut down transport times.

He said an average trip of 5 hours, would only take 3.6 hours once the project is completed.

The plans include the upgrading and reconstruction of 5 487km of existing highways, the construction of 2 775km of new highways and heavy maintenance to 8 505km of urban roads.

Ethiopia?s road network would expand from 37 000km to 48 000km, said ERA. -BiA Online
